A new kind of app for parents. What the term means, what such an assistant does and doesn't do, and what to look for when you choose one.
Short answer: an AI family assistant is an app that takes over the thinking behind running a household. You say or type what's going on, and the assistant turns it into tasks and appointments, fills in what you didn't say, divides it across the family and puts it where everyone already looks. A shared calendar shows what you entered yourself; an AI family assistant does part of the thinking and entering for you.
First, a disclosure: Saam is our own app and is one of these assistants. The other examples come from our overview of AI assistants for parents, checked on 8 October 2026.
Not every assistant does all of this. Most focus on one or two things, for example only turning school post into appointments.
A shared calendar is a place to store things. Someone still has to think of the PE kit, enter it and keep track of whether it happens. That invisible thinking is called mental load, and in most families it sits with one person. An AI family assistant tries to take over exactly that part. Saam has a family calendar too, but it fills itself.
A general assistant like ChatGPT can come up with a weekly menu or a packing list. But it doesn't remember what's going on in your home, divides nothing and puts nothing in everyone's calendar. A family assistant is built for that: it knows the members of the household, the calendar and what's already running.

What is an AI family assistant?
An app that takes over the thinking behind running a household. You say or type what's going on, and the assistant turns it into tasks and appointments, fills in what you didn't say, divides it across the family and puts it where everyone already looks, like WhatsApp and the calendar.
Is an AI family assistant the same as ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT is a general assistant: it can come up with a weekly menu, but it doesn't remember what's going on in your home, divides nothing and puts nothing in everyone's calendar. A family assistant knows the members of the household and the calendar, and is built for that.
